June 30th – 11:45 PM – Washington, DC
Sloan Dreyer slouched in his chair, cradling his drink on his stomach. The Russian vodka was far from smooth, but he welcomed the way it burned a fiery path to his gut.
The rotten taste of failure still lingered in his mouth, and he took another sip of his drink, desperate to swipe the bitterness away. Damn. Hadn’t he tried to convince Jordan he wasn’t the right man for the job? The fact that he knew how to speak Ukrainian didn’t mean jack-shit, and he’d sure as hell proved it during the fiasco this afternoon.
He’d failed in his job. Again. Security Specialists, Inc. wasn’t going to survive its first year in business if they continued losing the people they were supposed to protect.
The deputy prime minister of Russia was dead. Had been shot right under his fucking nose. Sloan had stuck as close to Josef Korolev as the bodyguards Korolev had brought with him from Russia, but still, when the screaming had started, he hadn’t even realized Korolev had been hit.
The Russian bodyguards had known, though, and they’d gone berserk, creating massive chaos that had taken hours to sort out. They’d managed to get Korolev to the closest hospital and the guy had actually survived surgery long enough to make it to the ICU.
Only to die of complications a few hours later.
Sloan took another sip of the corrosive vodka. He had no business protecting a toad, much less a Russian VIP. Jordan should have known better than to drop the assignment in his lap at the last minute. The fact he spoke Ukrainian shouldn’t have even entered the picture. Ukrainian was a softer language, nothing like pronouncing the hard constants of Russian. But had Jordan listened? No. Instead, Jordan had demanded he practice Russian for hours, as if cramming for a final exam, yet he’d still only caught a fourth of what the Russians had talked about.
The nurse, Natalia, had spoken in a slow, calm manner to Korolev, but all Sloan could figure out for sure was that she’d said something along the lines of the patient not needing to talk to the three of them.
He stared at the clear fluid in his glass, seeing instead the vision of the enticing nurse. She’d been amazingly beautiful. The baggy scrubs she wore had only given a hint of the slender body beneath. Her long blonde hair had been clipped back at the nape of her neck, but her high cheekbones, clear green eyes, and husky voice had been more than enough to capture his interest.
And the attention of every other guy standing within fifteen feet of her. After months of not feeling anything for anybody, the sensation of noticing her disturbed him.
What exactly had Josef told Natalia? Had her patient confided any secrets to her? Or had Korolev babbled nonsense from the drugs as she’d claimed? The blatant distrust in her eyes when he’d walked in with the two FBI agents, including the assistant director himself, hadn’t been reassuring. But the sound of her voice answering him in Ukrainian sent shivers of awareness darting down his spine. Damn, he had a weakness for a woman who could speak Ukrainian.
Late breaking news on the television diverted his attention from the untimely stirring of lust.
“Firefighters are still battling the five-alarm blaze in the northeast area of DC. One house has been declared as the original source of the fire, and so far the cause of the blaze is unknown. Police are searching for the home owner, Natalia Sokolova.”
The name had him straightening in his seat, his gaze arrested on the TV.
“At this time, they don’t believe she was in the house during the explosion since she was working the evening shift at a local hospital. But the police have not yet confirmed her whereabouts at this time.”
Shit. Shit! No way in hell could this be a coincidence. He leapt from his seat, snagged his cell phone and punched in a single number to speed dial his partner.
“Yeah?” Jordan’s groggy sleep-filled voice came from the other end of the line.
“We have a problem.” Sloan shoved his shoes back on his feet and reached for his car keys. He headed for the door at a run. “I need every piece of intel you have on Natalia Sokolova and I need it now. Someone just tried to kill her.”

First Impression

I went into this book with really low expectations, now let me explain why. I’m only just starting to read more Mystery and Suspense type novels, but I’ve been disappointed by a couple and decided that if I go into Target for Terror with low expectations than I won’t be easily disappointed. The synopsis is solid and I know there will be some romance, I just hope this isn’t predictable.

Opening Lines

I saw the man who shot me.”

The Good

WOW. This book is FANTASTIC! Target for Terror had me roped in from the first chapter! There was non stop action and this book kept me on my toes while I was trying to figure out what would happen next. Mind you, there were some chapters that I felt were a little slow. Nevertheless this book was well paced and not once did I find anything to be predictable, Woot! I know I’ve already said it but this book really kept me on my toes! Every time I would think I had a moment to catch my breath there was a new plot twist that just put me right back on my toes!

Sloan and Natalie…The intense chemistry and sexual tension between these two? WOW. Sloan has a history that causes him to be VERY protective of Natalie. What I liked the most was that Natalie was a strong character, people were trying to kill her and she didn’t turn into a flimsy/annoying character. She was very smart with her head on her shoulders and a perfect match for Sloan ;). But don’t me confused or put off by this, this was not a romance driven novel!

Target for Terror is the first book in the Security Specialists, Inc series, and let me just say what an amazing way to start off a series! I’m so happy that an excerpt for Target For Ransom was included at the back, I can’t wait for Jordan’s story! This was my first book by this author, I believe she also pens as Laura Iding.

The Bad / In-Between

  • Nothing.

Lasting Impression

Overall, Target for Terror is a highly addictive suspenseful read! I hope my review did give anything away because I really want everyone to read this book! I’ll be “patiently” waiting for Target For Ransom to release, in the meantime I might just have to re-read this one. Do I recommend it? YES!!

In Michael Murphy’s action-packed Prohibition-era novel of suspense, a mystery writer returns to the bright lights and dark alleys of New York City—uncovering a criminal conspiracy of terrifying proportions.

In 1933, America is at a crossroads: Prohibition will soon be history, organized crime is rampant, and President Roosevelt promises to combat the Great Depression with a New Deal. In these uncertain times, former-Pinkerton-detective-turned-bestselling-author Jake Donovan is beckoned home to Manhattan. He has made good money as the creator of dashing gumshoe Blackie Doyle, but the price of success was Laura Wilson, the woman he left behind. Now a Broadway star, Laura is engaged to a millionaire banker—and waltzing into a dangerous trap.

Before Jake can win Laura back, he’s nearly killed—and his former partner is shot dead—after a visit to the Yankee Club, a speakeasy dive in their old Queens neighborhood. Suddenly Jake and Laura are plunged into a conspiracy that runs afoul of gangsters, sweeping from New York’s private clubs to the halls of corporate power and to the White House itself. Brushing shoulders with the likes of Dashiell Hammett, Cole Porter, and Babe Ruth, Jake struggles to expose an inconspicuous organization hidden in plain sight, one determined to undermine the president and change the country forever.

**I received an advanced copy of The Yankee Club from NetGalley via Random House Publishing in exchange for an honest review**

First Impression

After reading Eyes On You by Kate White I wanted to dive into as many Mystery/Suspense novels as I could. So when I got contacted by TLC Book Tours and was given the synopsis for The Yankee Club I just couldn’t say no! And boy am I ever glad I didn’t. Historical Fiction and Mystery set in 1933? Toss me a dress, heels and pearl and call me doll!!

Opening Lines

As my train drew closer to New York City, the dining car’s rhythmic sway offered no comfort to the painful memories I left behind two years earlier.”

The Good

Setting – I was a tad bit nervous when I started The Yankee Club because I knew nothing about the Prohibition-era. Of course I’ve heard of it but I didn’t know every detail as why it came to be and how the era came to an end. Previous to Chapter 1 we’re giving a paragraph (I hope this included in the final copy) outlining what New York City was like in 1933 that gives readers a perfect introduction and back story.

Mystery – I got a new love, and it’s called Mystery. Sometimes mystery books just aren’t really that mysterious. I hate when you can actually predict what is going to happen and how it will all play out. Does that happen in The Yankee Club? NOPE!

Characters – Throughout The Yankee Club we are introduced to many different characters. Sometimes you come across a character that you can instantly tell is just a filler, and other times you come across characters that you think are just unnecessary. Neither of these happened in this novel. Every character played a part, and they played it well! The secondary characters held their own and helped the story and mystery flow.

Description/Style – Michael Murphy has a way with words. There were so many different points throughout The Yankee Club that had me feeling like I was actually there. The description was just perfect, and the amount of detail given gives readers a beautiful insight to life in the 1930’s.

I smiled and tossed the hankie out the side window. I glanced behind the car and watched a breeze toss it around like a kite in Central Park. As we turned the corner, the hankie fluttered between two cars then skidded along the sidewalk and disappeared in the streets of New York.”

The Bad

  • Nothing I would consider bad.

The In-Between

Character Depth – Michael Murphy gives us very entertaining and dynamic characters but at times I felt that these characters lacked having full depth to them. Secondary characters played key roles and we’re just as important as the main characters but I felt there was no real growth from majority of them.

Lasting Impression

Overall, The Yankee Club was a fantastic mystery read!! Shady characters, corruption, romance, mystery and suspense and not once did any of these factors overthrow the plot. I can’t wait to read All That Glitters which is the next book in A Jake and Laura Mystery series. Do I recommend this books? Yes. Will I read it again? Definitely before the month is over :).

First Impression

The title is Come? Okay, get your head out of the gutter Patty it doesn’t have to mean something dirty, even if there’s a half naked guy on the cover. *Reads synopsis* see Patty!? There’s no sexual reference what so ever! It’s probably just a suspenseful series with a little bit of romance. Get it together Patty.

Opening Lines

Even if I wasn’t looking…
Even if I wasn’t watching…
Even if I wasn’t obsessed…
There’s no way in hell I could miss her.”

The Good

 photo tumblr_moowllT2PI1qf7vx5o3_400_zpse8c01928.gif

WELL THEN!! I was wrong, oh I was so wrong. My head was originally in the RIGHT place! Who would have thought? Come is indeed dirty, hot, and steamy. This was my first J.A. Huss book and I have to say there was never a dull moment!! This book started off strong, the first couple of chapters were insanely good! But I felt that didn’t follow throughout the rest of the book. However, it still did keep me intrigued from beginning to end! I found both Harper and James to be unique and intriguing characters. It was funny seeing James go from Mr. Beautiful to Mr. Dark & Dirty. The above gif is equivalent to my facial expression while reading certain scenes! Also, I strongly believe that James is Edward Cullen’s twin. Why? He’s a stalker..

“I know she has a phone. But I also know she never uses it. I’ve checked the minutes. It never changes. I know how much money she has, what’s inside her fridge. I know she touches herself at night sometimes. And she moans as she comes, her back arching for a second.”

The Bad

  • Nothing that I would actually consider bad.

The In-Between

  • Suspense? Where art thou? – I was hoping to get some real suspense while reading this, but unless I missed it there was no suspense. Hopefully there will be some major suspense in the next book!
  • POV – With the way the synopsis is written I expected that majority of this book would be from James’ perspective, there were a couple of chapters from his pov but majority of them we’re from Harper. I wanted more James!!

Lasting Impression

Overall, Come was an interesting read. It’s one of those books that’s brings me out of my comfort zone but still manages to make me interested in seeing what will happen next! If you’re a fan of Adult Fiction/Erotica and Romance than this is a book you HAVE to read.

Love, betrayal and murder in a small town.

Twelve years after her mother’s murder, Shannon Bradford fears she may have helped convict an innocent man. Even worse, her prominent family may have had something to do with it. Desperate for answers, she seeks help from the one person least likely to give it. Her best friend and childhood crush, Trace Dawson. The man she sent to prison.

Serving hard time for murder has left Trace angry and bitter. As far as he’s concerned, digging into the past won’t replace the years he’s lost or erase the hell he’s lived. Now that he’s free, Shannon Bradford tops his list of bad memories. But he never counted on falling in love.

Set in a sleepy little town during the dead of winter, this award-winning romance novel is a tale of one woman’s quest for truth and a man’s struggle to forgive….

This story is the first in a trilogy of standalone contemporary romance novels in the ‘Sons of Temptation’ series.

Category: Romantic Mystery/Romantic Suspense. This is not erotica or romantica. This is a romance centered around a murder mystery.

Heat Factor: 3 out of 5 — The sexual tension is high, and the burn is slow. Sex is character-driven, rather than plot-driven.

 photo 4c7c57e9-244a-42fb-abaf-06f54de6e038_zpse7762b12.png

Just, wow!! This was a fantastic, suspenseful read! I didn’t know what to expect really when I started Within Temptations, but I certainly didn’t expect this! This story was so well written and intriguing, I found myself sitting at the edge of my seat! I will probably re-read this again this week, it was THAT good! I really liked Trace and Shannon, I liked how Trace was cold towards Shannon and given their history it made sense. This wasn’t a romance novel filled with fluff; this was a novel that was beautifully written and excellent character development and depth. The one thing that bothered me is that it seemed Shannon was too concerned over other people’s thoughts.

Overall, Within Temptations was a highly anticipating read. I recommend this to anyone who likes a good romance & mystery book. I honestly can’t believe that this is a debut book; I highly look forward to reading more books by Tanya, and especially the next book in the series that is about Cole, Trace’s brother 🙂

No more than two minutes could have passed, two of the most terrifying minutes I’d ever had. The left side of my face was numb with cold. My lips and hands ached too. I couldn’t seem to make anything move.

The details came in pieces. How I’d almost been run over. How a stranger shoved me to safety just before a Jeep playing target practice could send me flying.

Then as if someone had flipped a switch, sensory explosions filled the void. Horns blared. Somebody screamed. A baby was crying. And the wind howled while sounds burst forth in a crush of voices.

“I swear the brakes locked!” a teenage boy yelled. “She ain’t dead, is she? Oh, jeez. Daddy’s gonna kill me!”

“Don’t just stand there. Call 911!” a girl shrieked.

A cell phone chimed and someone started pressing numbers.

Next, an old man with a rough-and-ready voice said, “Pushed her out the way just in time. Another second and—”

“Is she dead or not?” the teenager demanded again.

While this was going on, I sat up, taking my time to ensure I was in one piece. Except for a sore hip, a bump on the head, and a scraped knee, I was fine. A woman standing nearby helped me, and as I got to my feet, realization dawned.

Trace Dawson had tried to save me.

I fought to see past the crowd into the parking lot, spotting him instantly. He’d just struggled to his feet and was staring right at me, his chin dripping blood. The people scurrying about and the cars streaming through the slush faded. Nothing but the two of us existed.

Memories flooded my mind, of the quiet riot he was, of the secret crush I’d had on him, and the extraordinary friendship we’d shared so many years ago. As fast as those images came, others replaced them.

I was thrust back to the crime scene, back to Mother’s corpse and the shirtless eighteen-year-old roaring obscenities while Sheriff Gray and a deputy dragged him away in handcuffs.

Trace Dawson the man glared at me now, and his eyes were hard and accusing, eyes brimming with fire and ice. A chill wind rumbled past him, but he stood as still as a statue. Only his eyes moved while he looked me up and down with agonizing thoroughness. The rage. The pain. It was all there.

Trace?” I whispered.

In chilling silence, he walked away without so much as a glance over his shoulder.

Our love is on his terms. He contacts me only through notes − unpredictable and untraceable. When we meet, he can touch me, but I’m not allowed to touch him. When we make love, it’s only after I have been bound and blindfolded. It’s the only time I truly feel alive. Which is why I play along with it. For now.

Caden Thaine is the most sinfully beautiful man I have ever seen. But more than that, his touch sets me on fire. And dear God, do I ache for him. I don’t know where he lives or even what he does. But this doesn’t scare me. My only fear is that one day his messages will stop. I know he’s hiding something. But that’s okay. I am hiding things, too. Like my real name and… who I really am. But the deeper I fall for him, the stronger my curiosity grows.

I could never have imagined just how much our lives are bound. And that pulling at his tangled web of secrets would cause my own dark past to come back to try and reclaim me. Will we survive? Will our love?

Adult romantic suspense. +18 years.

“I suppose you want to come in?” I say trying to keep the shake out of my voice.

He smiles. “No, kitten.”

I blink at him, stunned. No?

He leans close to me, so close I can make out the dapple of the lighter jade in his irises. Then he continues in that dark chocolate voice that turns my insides out, “You don’t believe this yet. But you are a woman who deserves to be taken slowly. And I intend to do just that.”

Now I can’t move.

And I can’t tear my eyes from him.

And I am both terrified and soaring because I think he might kiss me.

I close my eyes and inhale as he leans in. And my mouth parts…

But his lips brush softly on my cheek. Like a single drop of rain rolling off a leaf.

“Be good, kitten.”

And he walks away, leaving me stunned and confused and shaking in my heels from unfulfilled desire.

Author’s BioHanna

Hanna began to write at the tender age of seven, starting with a daring and questionable autobiography entitled Go Suck a Lemon. Perhaps it was a little before its time.

After leaving school she agreed with everyone who said she needed to get a degree and a real job to become a proper adult. She kept writing as a hobby. After starting (and never finishing) several degrees and switching from multiple careers, she finally decided that being a real adult was overrated. In 2012, she sold everything, moved to Europe and began to write full-time.

Eternally restless, Hanna has lived in Indonesia, Australia, Germany and Scotland. She is currently residing in England.

She is addicted to coffee and chocolate and would one day like to own a dragon.

Hanna Peach is the author of the Dark Angel urban fantasy series and Bound romantic suspense series. Angelblood (Dark Angel #4) and Bound by Fear (Bound #2) are due for publication in 2014.
